That'll Be The Day

It's been a while, hasn't it? I've had a busy month writing and scheming, and just finished ringing in the end of the year with The Searchers. I hate to be down on contemporary film, but it's so rare these days to encounter a story or a performance that's truly moving, that I find it imperative (for me, at least) to look back on great films and hold on to what made them so great.

I'm not really one for end-of-year lists, but my favorite movie of 2010, hands down, is Confessions (告白), Japan's entry for the Academy Awards. It has no US distribution--yet--and likely won't win a nomination, but it's a gutsy choice for Japan considering that foreign nominations tend to go to the most serious fare. Here's the AMAZING trailer:

Confessions is sadistic melodrama at it's finest, tonally fitting in somewhere between Battle Royale and Audition. Some of the filmmaker's influences are apparent in the trailer, and if you recognize them, you'd probably appreciate the film.

I'm in NYC for NYE, and contrary to reports, I will NOT be replacing Snooki in a death-defying act above Times Square. I will be ringing in the new with friends old and new, and hope you'll be doing the same. Cheers, all!
